Running a Business: Attracting the Right Clients
Watch NowRunning a successful business requires more than just a great product or service. You need to attract the right clients who will value what you offer. Here are seven essential tips to help you bring in new customers, even if you're just starting out and don't know anyone. The final tip is a must for long-term success, so read on to ensure you're building a profitable business.
1. Know Your Hook, But Jump at What the Market Gives You
Understanding why you're the best and what makes you different is crucial. If you're unsure, watch my video on unique selling propositions. It's also important to learn what the market needs. When I first started cold calling for my agency, I kept hearing "no" to video services. However, I noticed that some prospects asked if I could design their restaurant menus. After hearing so many rejections, I seized the opportunity to offer graphic design services. Adapt to market demands to stand out.
2. Be Memorable
To be memorable, you might need to go to extreme lengths. At networking events, I was often the youngest and knew no one. To make an impression, I once stood on a table and introduced myself loudly. It was unconventional, but it made me memorable. Find ways to stand out, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.
3. Follow Up and Be Likeable
The key to maintaining connections is following up. After networking events, reach out as soon as possible. Don’t wait a week; follow up every 2-3 days if necessary. Balance persistence with charm, as people prefer to do business with those they like. Building rapport is essential.
4. Close the Deal and Collect an Initial Payment
Closing a deal doesn't end with sending a proposal. You need to ensure the client accepts and pays an initial installment. This not only confirms their commitment but also provides you with working capital. Make sure your contract clearly states your terms and conditions to avoid any misunderstandings.
5. On Budget, On Time
Once the contract is signed and the initial payment is received, focus on delivering your work on budget and on time. Buffer your timelines to account for unexpected delays. If you anticipate being late, communicate promptly and reset expectations. Meeting deadlines builds trust and reliability.
6. Ask for More Work, Referrals, and Follow-Up
After completing a project, ask if there’s more work you can do for the client. Request referrals and stay in touch periodically. Taking clients out for coffee, lunch, or even a Zoom call keeps you top of mind. This ongoing engagement can lead to repeat business and valuable referrals.
7. Attitude
Your mindset is crucial. Believing in your success is half the battle. Running a business can be challenging, but viewing obstacles as learning opportunities can make a big difference. A positive attitude, focus, and hard work will always surpass talent and money. I've outlasted competitors with better credentials and more funding simply by believing in myself and working tirelessly.
