Authentic Networking: Build Bridges in 3 Steps (Skip the Awkward!)
Watch NowIntroduction
Today I'm giving you three steps on how to build bridges through warm networking. Some folks hate going to networking events where they have to be forced to have small talk and meet random strangers, passing business cards. I get it; it happens. If that's you, keep watching because we're going to talk about how to grow relationships without all the fluff.
1. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
I know you've probably heard this, but it's better to form fewer deeper connections than building a bunch of connections where you're surface-level deep. To do this, you can talk about their projects, personal passions, and even their challenges. To build a deeper relationship, show genuine interest and listen more than you talk.
2. Use Conversational Techniques
What you want to do is use open-ended questions that invite detailed responses. This is more than just "What do you do?" Ask them what they do for fun, what kind of challenges they have at work, and what their plans for a vacation are. This will build a foundation for relationships that actually have depth. If you can relate to some of the things that they're saying, you're going to build a deeper foundation for a long-term relationship.
3. (Actually) Follow Up
If you've had a really good conversation with someone at a networking event, don't just promise to follow up; actually do it. There are enough flakes in the world. Follow up by setting another meeting, going for a coffee, or even sharing an article with them that will actually address some of their problems at work. You can even introduce people that you know in your network to help them along or invite them to an upcoming event. This shows that you genuinely care about providing value to them and not just being another salesperson.
Bonus Tip!
Host your own events. This is a game changer. Sure, this might be a bit of work, but it's going to put you at the center of the circle and position you as a leader in the community. It's a powerful way to build relationships on your terms and it's a really good way to reflect your values on how you do business. Now, what if you really want to juice it up and be the center of attention to show your value to a captive audience?
